Named after the legendary Caribbean trickster spider, the press embodies wit, resilience and generational storytelling. Brer Anancy Press was founded in 2012 by V. Steve Russell — publisher, award-winning children’s author and CARIFESTA XV featured panelist. Our mission is to empower Caribbean authors and bring Caribbean stories to the world.

How we started
Steve published his first book through a third-party press and was earning 50 cents a copy on a book that sold for $14.95. At a book festival, an experienced publisher told him he could revise 20% of the book, release it as a second edition and take it back. He did exactly that — and Brer Anancy Press was born from that moment: a refusal to let the system keep Caribbean authors earning fractions of their own work.
That is why ownership is not a selling point at Brer Anancy Press. It is a founding principle.
What we stand for
- Ownership above everything. Your copyright, your rights and your royalties stay with you. We charge a one-time publishing fee and take no percentage of your sales.
- Quality without compromise. When you plant a flag, it has to come with quality and authority — especially for a debut.
- Caribbean stories, captured. Our folklore is moving from the oral tradition to the page, and it needs to be captured well. Libraries and readers across the diaspora are asking for these books.
- The long game. We think in series, spin-offs and the audience that grows up with your work.
- Marketing matters. A great book without a marketing plan is still invisible. We say so plainly.
